Johnson papers include colonel's almost daily letters to wife, September 1861 to December 1864; served with 81st near Washington, DC during 1861 Maryland elections in Siege of Yorktown until June 1862; with Veteran Reserve Corps in Columbus, Ohio, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Laurel, Maryland and Washington, DC; with 4th Brigade at Belle Plain, Port Royal, Battle of White House (Virginia), Cliffburne and E. Capitol Hill Barracks, DC; a few 1866-1867, papers on Kentucky and Louisiana.
